Measure With Confidence

How To Measure For Your Kilt

Accurate measurements are essential for a comfortable, traditional and properly fitted kilt. Follow each step carefully and, where possible, ask someone to help you.

Use a flexible measuring tape and take all measurements in the units requested below. Keep the tape comfortable and snug without pulling it too tightly.

Traditional Kilt

Kilt Measurements

Take the following measurements carefully to help us create the right fit for your kilt.

1

Measure Your Waist

Wrap a measuring tape around your natural waist, usually at navel level, where your kilt will sit. Keep the tape snug but not too tight.

Stand straight, relax and do not hold your breath. It is best to have someone assist you for accuracy.

2

Fell Measurement

The fell measurement is the distance from the waistband to the hip level where the pleats are sewn down.

This ensures a proper fit around the seat area and helps maintain the shape of the kilt.

3

Measure Your Seat

Measure around the widest part of your hips or seat while wearing trousers.

Keep your feet together and empty your pockets. Insert two fingers inside the tape for a comfortable fit.

4

Measure Kilt Length

Measure from the top of your hip bone, at navel level, down to the middle of your kneecap.

Stand straight with your feet slightly apart. Kilts are typically worn to the middle of the kneecap.

5

Measure Your Height

Remove your shoes and stand straight on a hard surface against a wall.

Measure from your heel to the top of your head. A full height measurement helps confirm the correct kilt length.

Traditional Kilt Options

Choose Sett or Stripe Pleating

Traditional kilts can be pleated in different ways depending on the look and tradition you prefer.

Sett Pleating

Shows the full tartan design in the pleats. This creates a classic traditional appearance and keeps the tartan pattern visually prominent.

Stripe Pleating

Aligns the vertical stripes of the tartan at the centre of each pleat, creating a more structured and distinctive appearance.

Traditional Note: Civilian kilts are traditionally pleated to the Sett, while military kilts are traditionally pleated to the Stripe. The final choice is yours.
